Section: Languages, Schools   |   School: School of Rhetoric

This advanced French course will build a more natural rhetorical grasp of the language. The goal of this course is to give the students as many opportunities as possible to practice the communication skills that they have built in French 1, 2, and 3. This course is taught almost entirely in French, and students are continually encouraged to use their skills discussing and writing about important works of literature, music, poetry, and relevant cultural issues. They will also continue to be exposed to cultural differences, contemporary social and cultural issues, as well as to idiomatic expressions and non-verbal communication skills that are needed to truly understand how the language works in the context of the people who speak it. Students successfully completing French 4 will be prepared to communicate effectively in real-life situations in French, both verbally and in writing.

NOTE: Given the low expected enrollment in advanced French courses for 2024-25, French 4 students will meet together with French 3 students in a combined class.  Separate written assignments and readings will reflect the more advanced abilities of these students.
