Advanced Placement® Latin is a rigorous, college-level course designed for students who intend to take the Latin Advanced Placement® exam. Students follow a College Board-approved syllabus as they study selections from Caesar’s Gallic Wars and Virgil’s Aeneid. Students focus on the grammatical details of the texts while also studying these works as literature as they discuss content, theme, context, rhetorical devices, etc. Through class discussions and writing assignments, students learn to analyze a text through critical and reflective reading. Students who do not intend to take the AP® Latin exam but who are interested in a thorough study of Caesar and Virgil are also invited to enroll.

Topics include: translating Caesar and Virgil texts into English, reading English translations of assigned texts in tandem with Latin, demonstrating comprehension through discussion and essay writing, reading Latin aloud, studying texts using specific terminology to refer to grammar and literary devices; and relating Latin passages to Roman historical, cultural and literary contexts through teacher-guided discussions and additional research.

Prerequisites: Latin 3; Mastery of Latin grammar

Homework Habits: Students typically spend 3 hours a week on translation assignments, discussion board posts and grammar assessments.
