Earth Science encourages wonder for the world God created, helps each child see God’s glory as revealed in His creation and equips students with the tools of scientific study. This class fosters a love for the natural world, specifically the geosphere and hydrosphere. Students learn the theory of plate tectonics, navigate through mountains, observe the impacts of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, and discover how water and wind reshape the land along the surface of Earth. They marvel at the intricate crystal structures of minerals and ponder what the Earth was like when fossils were living.

Topics include: matter and minerals, rocks and the rock cycle, plate tectonics, volcanoes, earthquakes, the hydrologic cycle, landforms and oceanography; the historical advancement of geology and oceanography; observation and classification; applying the scientific method to answer questions about God’s design of the world; exercises in comparison and contrast; cause-and-effect, process thinking and systems thinking.

Homework Habits: Students typically spend 3-4 hours a week on reading assignments, vocabulary and discussion board posts. Students also prepare model activities or experiments and one research project each semester.
