Marie Owens grew up in Michigan and attended Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, where she graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in biology. She then attended the Medical University of South Carolina (in Charleston), earning a PhD in microbiology and immunology. (As you might guess, little things are important to her.) She was awarded an American Society of Microbiology fellowship to conduct post-doctoral research at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, GA. Her cross-cultural marriage to a Southerner has been a blessing beyond compare. She and Rick live in Charleston, SC, with their four children, including a 13 year-old son they recently adopted from China. Their oldest daughter is an Honors student at the College of Charleston. The younger three are in various stages of home education. When not teaching, she enjoys cooking, reading, swimming, running and other outdoor adventures.
