Honors Chemistry (Pre-AP)

This is an accelerated, pre-AP first-year chemistry course designed for students who have demonstrated an aptitude and enthusiasm for studying science. It will provide students with an understanding of the properties of, and interactions between, different types of matter. Students will understand fundamental concepts concerning atoms, elements, and compounds. They will also comprehend the trends within the periodic table and how the atomic structure of elements affects their physical, chemical, and bonding properties. After this foundation, chemical reactions and equations will be explored, as well as thermodynamics, kinetics, equilibrium, and electrochemistry. The course will conclude with a brief survey of nuclear and organic chemistry. Throughout the course, students will get hands-on laboratory experience by performing experiments designed to be to be successfully accomplished at home.

Prerequisites: Algebra 1
Textbook: Holt Modern Chemistry (Sarquis & Sarquis); ISBN: 978-0547586632
Laboratory Kit: MicroChem Kit (standard edition) available from Quality Science Labs.

AP Chemistry

This course is designed to be the equivalent of the general chemistry course usually taken during the first year of college. A student in this course will expand on material mastered in a first-year high school chemistry course: looking at more advanced explanations and theories of chemical properties and behavior, emphasizing a more mathematical approach to problem solving for a number of topics, and covering the characteristic chemistry of more classifications of elements, compounds, and materials. Students will, also, obtain additional hands-on laboratory experience by performing experiments at home using lab equipment and reagents ranging from household chemicals to chemicals purchased from a chemical supplier. Being a course that is designed to provide an equivalent learning experience to a college level class, it will demand the time and devotion that a college course requires. This course will provide the educational foundation for students to take the AP Chemistry exam.
